Very Reverend Archpriest Father John J. Kapitan Jr., OFM fell asleep in the Lord on December 29, 2025.
Father John was born in Cleveland, Ohio on September 17, 1951, the only child of John and Mary (Krych) Kapitan. He was graduated from Midpark Senior High School, Middleburgh Heights, Ohio in 1969.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Kent State University in 1973. In 1979 he received a Masters of Arts in Human Resources Management from Pepperdine University. He served in the US Army Quartermaster Corps from June 1973 to June 1983, retiring as a Major. He entered Holy Dormition Monastery, Sybertsville, Pa. and professed Solemn Vows August 1993. He was ordained to the priesthood June 11, 1995, by Bishop Michael Dudick.
Father John served the following Byzantine Catholic Parishes: St. Philip, Sacramento, Calif.; and St. Athanasius, Indianapolis, Ind. In Ohio he served: St. Barbara, Dayton; St. Michael, Pleasant City; and St. Joseph, Toronto, and St. John the Baptist, Mingo Junction, from where he retired.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by many cousins. He is survived by members of his community, the Order of Friars Minor.
Visitation for Father John will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Mt. Macrina Monastery Chapel, Uniontown from 4 PM to 6:30 PM. A Parastas will be celebrated at 6:30 PM. The Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the Monastery Chapel on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 10:30 AM. Burial will take place following the funeral at Mt. Macrina Cemetery.
