Sophie Capan Obituary

Sophie Mary (Markusic) Capan, 95, of Coolspring, Pa., passed away Monday, April 14, 2025.
She was born on November 7, 1929, in Oliver #3, Pa., to Frank and Anna Matayka Markusic.

In addition to her parents, Sophie is predeceased by her husband of 63 years, John "Trailer" Capan; her two sons, John and David; a grandson, Michael; her three brothers, Frank, Rudolph, and Victor Markusic; and her lifelong best friend, Mary Kokiko.

She is survived by her two sons, William "Bill" and Robert "Bob" (wife Debra); grandchildren Johnny (April), Amanda (Jake), Roberta, Maria, and Victoria (Mark); great-grandchildren Ethan, Emma, Tyson, Audrey, and Adalyn; daughters-in-law, Sheryl Capan and Janice "Mickey" Deli; her brother Douglas of Ohio; 21 godchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom she cherished.

Sophie graduated from North Union High School in 1947. She was the Controller at Center Independent Oil in Smock, Pa., for 20 years. She then became the CEO of the Albert Gallatin Senior Center in Masontown, where she worked for another 20 years before retiring at the age of 80. Sophie was the very picture of ambition – her work ethic was truly admirable.
She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Nativity Church of Uniontown. Sophie served as a lector and was a devoted member of the Christian Mothers. She proudly served as the President of the Uniontown Catholic War Veterans and later as the State President of the organization. She was also the National Treasurer for the CWV and was honored as the CWV Woman of the Year in 2006. Sophie belonged to the Red Hat Society and enjoyed spending time with her friends in The Card Club.

She was known for her unwavering strength, sharp mind, and tireless work ethic. Sophie lived independently in her immaculate home—never a spot of dust in sight, she took great pride in her home and never wanted to leave it. However, following a fall, she moved into The Gathering Place, where she quickly became beloved by the staff. Over the course of six months, it truly became her new home and family. Even in her final days, Sophie remained mentally sharp and strong. She never felt sorry for herself—a motto she lived by and worked to instill in others. Had her legs allowed it, she would have gotten up and gone to work right there in the nursing home. The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff of The Gathering Place for their compassionate and devoted care.
