Memories help me to feel connected with dad: I remember playing Monopoly with dad, which was the only kids’ board game that he liked, because it taught us about capitalism and how it worked.  He always won! and he finally taught us his secret, which was to buy as much property as possible and build on it.  To this day, when I play monopoly with Bri and Michael, I talk to them about how dad used to play and tell them his secrets for winning, so the tradition, competition and the fun is passed on to future generations.

I remember Dad, at our summer camp near St Anicet in Quebec, Canada, taking us out in his boat and how he taught me how to drive his boat with the small outboard motor and no steering wheel. I wasn’t old enough to drive a car, but he taught me how to take all the younger kids and cousins across the inlet in the boat when relatives were visiting, so that we could all get ice cream or candy.  It felt great to be trusted by him to do this.

Dad loved woodworking, just as I do and I remember dad showing me how he had to take the blade off the DeWalt scrollsaw, to insert it into the hole that he drilled in a beautiful piece of wood, in order to scroll our names in a napkin holder or to scroll a maple leaf.  He had an eye for detail and enormous patience to do that.  I think of him often when I work in my woodshop.
