James (Jim) William Matthews Sr., 86, of Uniontown, passed away on Saturday, April 6th, 2024 at his home.
He was born July 26, 1937 in Uniontown, the son of the late Joseph Matthews and Goldie (Varndell) Matthews.
In addition to his parents, James is predeceased by brother Joseph (Butch) Matthews and sister Eileen (Jim) McManus.
James is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 33 years, Mary Jo (Popson) Matthews; Brother Gerald (Violet Tate) Matthews; Sister Pam Sokol; daughters Kara Popson (Donnie Smosny IV); Michelle (Tim) Grimm; Patricia (Anthony) Valauri; Kimberly (Jeffrey) Christopher; and Heidi Dluhy; sons Joseph (Shannon) Popson; Chris Popson (Beth Rudzienski); and James Matthews Jr.; grandchildren Heather (Eric) Triscritti; Hillary (Mark) Helmer; Shadd Matthews (Morgan Faris); Jamen Matthews; Brenna Grimm; Ian Grimm; Hailey Popson; Jacob Popson; and Brady Mahoney; great grandchildren Elliot Helmer and Logan Matthews; a special sister in law Geraldine (John) Saluga; many cousins, nieces, and nephews who meant the world to him; as well as two fur babies Benny and Joe Jonas.
James was a four year Veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked in construction and then later worked at Uniontown Hospital where he retired after 20 years of service.
He was a family man and loved his children. James loved to fish and enjoyed visiting the beach. He was a member of the ADAH Gun Club for over 50 years. He was also a lifetime member of Hutchinsons Sportsman Club and the VFW Post 8543, North Union.
James will be missed dearly by his family and friends.
Viewing will be held in the Crawford Funeral Home, HOPWOOD, on Tuesday April 9th, 2024 from 5pm to 7pm when a blessing service will be held followed by military honors with AMVETS Post 103. A memorial mass will be held at a later date in June 2024.
