DONALD R. CRAWFOD FUNERAL HOME
Richard Warren Ryan passed away November 5, 2018, Richard was born November 7, 1947. He was predeceased by his parents Warren and Lillie (Myers) Ryan, his brother Roger Ryan and nephew Warren N. Dougherty. He was an avid fisherman adept at river and sea, he enjoyed the sport from California to the Caribbean. Richard was a USMC Veteran of the Vietnam War and was highly decorated with the following: A Silver Star; Two Purple Hearts; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal and A Vietnam Campaign Medal, here is an excert from his Silver Star commendation reads:
“ For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a radio operator with Company A. 1st Battalion, First Marines, 1st Marine Division in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam.”
“He observed a grenade falling in the midst of three marines and unhesitatingly shoved them out of the danger area. Unable to reach safety himself, LCpl. Ryan sustained severe wounds to the neck and face. Ignoring his painful wounds he returned to his position and commenced to operate the radio relaying assistance until all other wounded men had been treated and evacuated. By his extraordinary courage, unwavering determination and selfless devotion to duty and great personal risk, LClp. Ryan upheld the highest traditions of the marine corps and the U.S. Naval Service.”
Richard will be missed by his family, Marqueta Ryan or Loganville, GA; Victoria Ryan Dougherty of Harrisburg, PA; Allen K. Ryan of Fairchance, PA; Clayton S. Ryan of Farmington, PA and several nieces. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service held at the Alfred Wilson VFW Post 7219 3W Church Street Fairchance, PA on Saturday November 17th at 1:00 PM.
