James Murtha Obituary

James P. "Jim" Murtha Sr.  age 64 of Uniontown, Pa. has left this earth on February 21, 2019 and is now with Jesus after a full, faithful and righteous life.

Son of the late Thomas and Helen Murtha and son-in-law of the late Donald and Marcella Hogan. James was born in Uniontown Pa on December 31, 1954.   He graduated from St John’s High School in 1972 and attended Lock Haven University.  Following in his father’s footsteps, James went to work as a coal miner at Maple Creek and continued to work in the profession for 42 years until his much-deserved retirement from Cumberland Mine.

James was a lifelong member of St. John the Evangelist RC Church in Uniontown where he received all his sacraments and attended Mass daily.  He also said the weekly Rosary at the Marquis House for the elderly.  He was a member of the BPO Elks #370.  He was an avid weight lifter and exercised daily.  He enjoyed watching basketball and played it weekly with his sons.  He was always busy doing something around the house and working outside.  There are not enough words to express all he did for everyone.

His catholic faith was very important to his life and he worked hard to make sure his children received a catholic education.

He married the love of his life Mary Pat {Hogan} Murtha on NOVEMBER 27, 1976 AT St. John the Evangelist Church.  They created a loving family that grew to five children, their spouses and nine grandchildren.  Children include Jessica {Brian} Moody, James Jr. {Leslie}, Jerrod {Missie}, Jenna, and Joseph {Chelsea].  His grandchildren, Nate and Lucas Moody, Madelyn, Olivia and Josh DeBord, Paisley, Charley and Lilley Murtha and Hadley Murtha.  He leaves behind his brothers and sisters, Maureen, Tom Jr. (Cathy), Kevin (Kim), and John (Jeanne) Murtha and Susan Hutzel (Kenny).  He also had numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim lived for God and his family foremost. He was a quiet man, but he carried all of us with no complaints.   He never said no but never wanted attention for his good deeds. He was always there for us and will always be with us.

Friends will be received in Donald R. Crawford Funeral Home, Hopwood, PA, on Saturday, February 23rd from 6-8PM, Sunday, February 24th from 1-5PM, and Monday, February 25th until 10AM when a blessing service will be held followed by a 1030AM mass of Christian burial at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Uniontown, PA.  Interment will follow in Mt.
